1.3.3 Microbiome in Anaerobic digesters

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is driven by different groups of microorganisms: hydrolytic, fermentative and syntrophic bacteria along with methanogenic archaea that establish a complex and highly interconnected metabolic network able to transform organic matter into methane. The knowledge about the interconnections of reactor´s operational conditions, process stability and structural organization and functioning of AD microbiome could allow the development and improvement of process management strategies.

In this research line, we apply molecular biology techniques to unravel the AD microbiome functioning, diversity, dynamics and species interactions under different operational conditions.
