Short and medium chain carboxylate production from lignocellulosic biomass

Short and medium chain carboxylate production from lignocellulosic biomass

16 Jul 2025

Congratulations to Juan Iglesias for his doctoral thesis "Short and medium chain carboxylate production from lignocellulosic biomass", developed within the framework of the European project Cell4Chem, under the supervision of professors Marta Carballa and Miguel Mauricio.

His research proposed a sustainable biotechnological alternative to convert agricultural and forestry residues, into short- and medium-chain carboxylates, compounds with high potential in sectors such as energy, cosmetics, and biodegradable plastics. Using anaerobic fermentation and optimized reactor configurations, the study successfully directed the efficient production of compounds like lactate, butyrate, and caproate.

His work achieved the highest distinction, Sobresaliente Cum Laude, awarded unanimously by a committee composed by Dr. Juan M. Lema (USC), Dr. Cristina González (U Valladolid) and Dr. Piotr Oleskowicz-Popiel (Politechnika Poznanska, Poland).

Congratulations Juan!
