The postdoctoral researcher Ana Arias won the 8th Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis of the AgroBank Chair ‘Quality and Innovation in the Agri-Food Sector’, promoted by CaixaBank and the University of Lleida. This award recognizes the excellence of her research in terms of innovation, quality and agri-food safety for her work: "‘Converting bio-waste into biomaterials and bioactive products: an area of the circular economy"
The objective of her thesis, supervised by Prof. Maite Moreira and Prof. Gumersindo Feijoo, was to provide various case studies of waste valorization for the production of high added value products, under the approach of biorefinery and biotechnology processes. Specifically, wastes from food, agriculture and forestry sectors were evaluated from the point of view of sustainability and circularity. Ana offered various solutions to manage agricultural and forestry waste that pose a problem for both the environment and human health, proposing more sustainable production models that promote the circular economy.
Congratulations Ana!!
