A recent study resulting from the collaboration between IDIS Research Center (Health Research Institute of Santiago de Compostela (IDIS)), BioGroup-CRETUS researchers and staff from Galician health centers, has scientifically demonstrated the benefits of the Atlantic Diet on health and the environment. This diet is characteristic from Galicia and northern Portugal and emphasizes the high consumption of fresh, seasonal and locally sourced foods, such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, fish and dairy products.
The study followed 250 families over a six-month. Half of them, continued with their usual diet, while the rest had their nutritional habits modified. After analyzing different variables, it was found that those who followed the Atlantic diet had a “significantly lower” risk of developing metabolic syndrome. The researchers from biogroup and cretus (Cristina Cambeses, Sara González, Maite Moreira and Gumersindo Feijoo) worked on determining the environmental impact, assessing the CO2 emissions associated with each participant’s diet.
The work has been recently published in the scientific journal Jama Network (Traditional Atlantic Diet and Its Effect on Health and the Environment: A Secondary Analysis of the GALIAT Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial | Nutrition, Obesity, Exercise )
